When It Comes to College ~ Are You Feeling Lost and Out of Control About Your Future?

How do you find your way to your future self?

I will give you one of my favorite quotes:

“The best way to predict your future is to create it.” ~ Peter Drucker

Think about it, you already have all of the answers inside you and that is probably the one place you are not looking.

You are bombarded with advertisements of shiny, “Ivy Green” Universities, and all of these schools will be more than happy to answer the questions you have about your own future.

Of course the answer is always their university, college or conservatory.

And once you think you have chosen a university, you are presented with another shinier, fancier school that will answer all of the questions you have about your future.

But I am here to tell you that the answer you are looking for is inside you. I know that might sound all Zen and New Age, but really you just need to look at your own needs and wants to steer you in the right direction.

I know sometimes it is difficult to know where to start, but how about you begin by answering your own questions about your future?

Just sit still and clear your mind and take this moment to go back through your day and reminisce about your thoughts from the time you woke up until now. Good or bad, write them down and have a look. How are you talking to yourself? Do you believe everything everyone else says about you and your path in life? Are you excited about moving forward and creating something new for yourself?

I have a short exercise in my free PDF “The Seven Secrets of College Admission” that will give you a quick start to clarifying your needs and wants for your future. This can be found on my home page of my website:

Just scroll down a bit and you will see it :)

To begin, I believe your future can begin by picturing your perfect life. As everything begins in our minds.

This actually is fun to do. You write down things in your life that make you happy, things that make you feel alive and excited. Forget your homework, SAT scores, AP classes, GPAs and music lessons, recitals and orchestra or jazz concerts. You are super busy and have a lot on your plate so remember this is just like a game but it is a game that can change your life. If you have my free PDF, you can use this to organize your thoughts or just a piece of paper will do.

So, Let’s Envision Your Life in 4 years!

Where do you want to be in 4 years?

~ Write it Down ~

  1. When you are writing your ideal life down, be as detailed as possible. Where do you see yourself?

  2. Again, be as detailed as possible and write down the weather where you are, the smells. Is your place sunny or cloudy, cold or warm? Are you sitting on the deck of your cottage in the woods, on the beach or watching a beautiful desert sunset?

  3. Cover all of the important aspects of your life: Your relationships, your health, money, personal growth, adventure, happiness and creativity. This should be filled with moments that make you happy.

  4. When you are finished, write it all down clearly and put this paragraph or list somewhere where you can see it every day. This is extremely important as you will need the reminder of where you want to be.

  5. Start to reverse engineer this life you want. (We can do this in another Blog.)

Remember to Breathe and to Think and write this all down with a pen and paper not on your computer or smartphone. Writing things down on paper will help you remember and focus. Also, make certain that you do this exercise where there are no distractions so you have time to really think about this. After you are finished, put this list somewhere next to your bed so you can read it in the morning and at night. Keep your future close to you at all times!
